# Preview Marketplace plan prices with the right assumptions
A price preview is an estimate, not an enrollment decision or a final eligibility result. The displayed premium can depend on who needs coverage, household income, location, ages, and the coverage year. Gather those details before comparing plans.
Prepare accurate inputs
Use the household members expected to file a federal tax return together and identify who actually needs coverage. Enter the correct state, county or ZIP code, ages, and coverage start date. Estimate annual household income using the Marketplace instructions and include the income sources it asks for. If income is uncertain, use a reasonable estimate and update the application when circumstances change.
Distinguish the tax household from the people seeking insurance. A spouse or dependent may affect financial-help calculations even when they have other coverage. Employer coverage offers can also affect eligibility for premium tax credits. The preview cannot resolve every case; complete the Marketplace application for an official determination.
Understand the displayed price
Compare the gross premium with the estimated premium after any tax credit. If you choose to apply advance premium tax credits during the year, they are reconciled on your federal tax return. Report income, household, and other coverage changes promptly. The final amount of credit can differ from the advance estimate.
Do not compare premiums alone. Review deductible, copays, coinsurance, out-of-pocket maximum, provider network, and prescription formulary. Metal categories describe average cost sharing, not quality of care. Eligible cost-sharing reductions are tied to qualifying circumstances and Silver Marketplace plan selection; check your own application result.
Verify the actual plan
After previewing, use the official Marketplace to view the current year’s plans and complete an application. Open the Summary of Benefits and Coverage and provider directory for every finalist. Confirm doctors, hospitals, drugs, effective dates, enrollment deadlines, and whether the plan is available in your exact area. A preview is not a locked quote and does not reserve a plan.
If you are outside Open Enrollment, check whether a qualifying event permits a Special Enrollment Period. Keep the notice and documents and follow the Marketplace instructions for verification. Rules and available plans vary by year and location, so use the current official application as the source of your eligibility and enrollment status.
